Firefly
I doused the lights at taps last night to find
a dazzling flying thing had made her way
inside my house and asked to see my mind,
or so I thought. I’m sure I heard her say
“I’ll light this room for you if in return
you’ll tell me what you think. I dance on air
you know, and glow with pride. And yet I yearn
to learn if those who watch are glad I’m there.”
“You totally surprised me, lass,” I said.
“I’d just lain down and suddenly your fire
appeared above my pillowed, tired head.
I will say this, to honor your desire:
‘Come back tomorrow; bring your many friends.
I hope this pixie dancing never ends.’”
